IN PERSON WORKSHOP

Date: November 13, 2024

Instructor: Jill Staubitz

Workshop Description: How often have you asked, “I understand how to weave it, but how did you develop those tie-ups?” Somehow, the concept of block weaves and profile drafting mystifies weavers of all levels of weaving experience. Yet, by understanding the basic principles, a weaver has the power to create a profile draft and translate it into cloth, thereby designing and weaving a unique design!

We will discuss the significant differences between block weaves vs. block weaves that are unit weaves, highlighting the capabilities of both using Overshot, Summer and Winter, and Bronson Lace. Each structure will be translated into a thread-by-thread draft using one profile.

Bring graph paper and a pencil to design your profile. I will demonstrate how to create a profile draft and turn it into a thread-by-thread draft using FiberWorks’s Block Substitution tool. Computers with drafting software are not necessary but are welcome.

This class is designed for intermediate weavers who weave on an 8-shaft jack loom and/or an 8-shaft table loom (countermarche and counterbalance looms won’t work because we’ll discuss skeleton tie ups for treadling).

Jill provides a detailed .pdf booklet explaining what we’ll discuss during the workshop and the interactive exercises we’ll do in class. These booklets make an excellent addition to a weaving library

Supplies: Graphs paper, pencils and erasers. Students are required to purchase, print, and bring the .pdf booklet to class.

Materials/Handouts Fee: $15

Attendee Limit: 20

Instructor Bio: I fell in love with weaving about twelve years ago when I retired from my career in graphic design. The two disciplines overlap perfectly through my love for color, pattern, and the design process. My classes focus on aiding weavers in understanding weave structures. The pandemic led me to launch my Modern Weaver Facebook page to build a community of weavers who desire to connect with others around the globe. I love teaching structures in a simple, understandable way. It is my greatest delight when participants come away from my presentations and workshops with a clear understanding and feel confident enough to create their own woven cloth.
